‘Help Me Find a Job’: Preparing for a Job Interview

12 Feb 13 - 23:46

“Help me find a job” is a common plea these days. Job applicants have to deal with a significant amount of competition in the current employment market. Candidates need to be able to relate comfortably with the latest market trends in order to succeed.

For instance, more and more employers are using online interviews to identify the best candidates for their companies. Succeeding at a video interview requires prior preparation. Here are some top tips from career consultants on ways to succeed in job interviews, both online as well as in real life.

Preparing for an Online Job Interview

Most interviewers will email specific instructions regarding the online interview. Others may communicate the particulars over the phone. Make sure to carefully listen to and read thorough all such communication.

Candidates can always call up their recruiting agent for more information if there is any doubt or if such instructions are not forthcoming. It is always better to clarify issues prior to the actual interview. This ensures that you will be able to put your best foot forward during the actual online interview.

Spend some time familiarizing yourself with the equipment needed. Ask a friend, mentor or family member who has prior experience with such interviews for help. Be honest and explain that ‘it’s to help me find a job’. Most people will be happy to help out in any way in such a situation.

It’s a good idea to give a mock interview and have a helpful friend, family member or colleague critically review the results. Do a thorough check on your own for any potential issues.

Pay attention to your appearance; attitude; surroundings and speech patterns. Make sure there is nothing in the camera frame to distract attention from yourself. Remove any desk accessories, clutter and/or background items that may catch the interviewers’ attention.

General Interview Tips

It is important to dress appropriately for any job interview. Dress in a formal business outfit regardless of whether the interview takes place online or in person, unless of course the recruiter specifically indicates otherwise. Nevertheless, when in doubt, it is always better to err on the side of conservatism.

Communication over the microphone can alter your normal speaking voice to a significant degree. Try to speak slightly slower than usual to ensure that the interview panel members are able to hear you clearly. Make sure to avoid breathing directly into the microphone. Pacing your voice also allows you better breath control, which helps prevent heavy breathing or gasping over the microphone.

Practice pitching your voice slightly lower than usual when recording your interview. This will make your voice sound more confident and pleasing. However, do not make the mistake of speaking in a monotone. Rather, be energetic and expressive when speaking. A good tip is to raise your pitch slightly at the end of a sentence or to underline an important point.

Follow these simple tips to put an end to your days of asking people, “Please help me find a job”.
